Nonhlanhla (Nhlanhla) Mokwena (BA Social Work, Cert. Education and Training and Development Practitioners) is currently on sabbatical as the Executive Director of the organization People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA). POWA is a feminist organisation that works to promote women’s rights and hoping for a South Africa where Violence Against Women (VAW) is eradicated. She started working at POWA as an intern social worker in 1996 and was appointed as social worker providing direct services to women and their children who were survivors of violence and became a shelter manager. She has also worked for the Department of Social Development as an HIV and AIDS Coordinator and the National Lotteries Board Trust Fund. She returned home to POWA in 2007 as a Front Line Service Coordinator and was appointed Executive Director in 2009. She is currently studying for her LLM/MPhil Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa.
