Nahaja Adam
CARA (Countering Anti-Rights Actors) Associate Lawyer
Nahaja Adam is Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana. She holds an LLB from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), a Qualifying Certificate in Law from the Ghana School of Law, and an LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa from the University of Pretoria, where she is currently pursuing her LLD.
Before joining ISLA as an Associate Lawyer with the ACRN/CARAN Network, Nahaja served as an Academic Associate in the Department of Jurisprudence at the University of Pretoria where she assisted with teaching and research. She has also worked with the Fair Justice Initiative, the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) and the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice. In these roles, she provided legal representation to incarcerated individuals without access to legal representation, advocated for the rights of gender and sexual minorities, and collaborated with justice sector stakeholders on a national advocacy to decriminalise petty offences in Ghana. Nahaja’s ability to strategically navigate complex human rights issues is in part due to her commitment to social justice and her experience working with social movements.
Outside of work, Nahaja is a curious learner. She enjoys discovering new hobbies, currently DJing and taekwondo and is an amateur plant parent to a ficus benjamina (with mixed results).
About Us
Founded in 2014, the Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa (ISLA) is a Pan-African and feminist initiative with a timely remit: to strengthen strategic human rights litigation across the African continent. Essentially, we aim to change the way that strategic litigation is used so as to enable broader access to justice and to support those who seek to hold states accountable for violations of women’s human rights and sexual rights.
