ISLA AT ACHPR87: Feminist Advocacy, Strategic Litigation & Regional Human Rights Debates
The 87th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) unfolded at a moment of growing contestation within Africa’s human rights landscape.
Against the backdrop of shrinking civic space, rising anti-rights mobilisation and evolving regional legal frameworks, ISLA joined partners, movements and defenders in critical conversations shaping the future of human rights on the continent. From strategic dialogues on The African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AUCEVAWG), Interventions on the Draft Charter on Family, Sovereignty and Values, to the ACHPR Declaration on the Promotion of the Role of Human Rights Defenders and their protection in Africa, our engagements reflected both the urgency of the moment and the power of collective legal mobilisation.

About Us
Founded in 2014, the Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa (ISLA) is a Pan-African and feminist initiative with a timely remit: to strengthen strategic human rights litigation across the African continent. Essentially, we aim to change the way that strategic litigation is used so as to enable broader access to justice and to support those who seek to hold states accountable for violations of women’s human rights and sexual rights.
