ISLA at the 81st Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights at Banjul, Gambia from 14th to 23rd October, 2024

As part of its work to influence and strengthen regional mechanisms, ISLA conducted a number of activities at the sidelines of the 81st Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (the Commission) held in Banjul, Gambia from 14th October to 23rd October 2024. Under the umbrella of Africa Civil Society Engagement (ACSE), ISLA brought together civil society actors to share insights on emerging issues on the rights of women and sexual minorities within the African human rights system; increase knowledge on utilising African human rights mechanisms in advancing women’s human rights and sexual rights; and receive insights from diverse stakeholders on strategies to advance contested rights at the Commission and counter the growing anti-rights influence on the continent. It also provided a critical space for ISLA to connect with partners to share developments on ongoing regional work and strategise on sustained engagement with the Commission. This space deepened collaboration among civil society actors working at the Commission and ISLA looks forward to continuing engagement both at the Commission and in vital inter-session work.

About Us

Founded in 2014, the Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa (ISLA) is a Pan-African and feminist initiative with a timely remit: to strengthen strategic human rights litigation across the African continent. Essentially, we aim to change the way that strategic litigation is used so as to enable broader access to justice and to support those who seek to hold states accountable for violations of women’s human rights and sexual rights.
