Expert Advisory on Obstetric Violence(OV):
In March 2024 we hosted our first expert advisory on obstetric violence seeking to reach clarity on: a definition of obstetric violence and developing a framework for litigating obstetric violence. This advisory provided key insights on both the conceptual and definitional challenges around obstetric violence in Africa but failed to reach consensus on a framework for litigating obstetric violence.
As a result we are hosting a second iteration of the Expert Advisory on OV, armed with lessons from the first iteration, ongoing developments in the continent (The ACHPR’s disappointing merits decision in Communication 564/15: Community Law Centre and three Others (on behalf of the Five Victims) v The Federal Republic of Nigeria), and the side event hosted through the Women’s Platform on OV. This shall take place between 14-17th April 2025 where we shall host experts from Africa, Europe and Latin America aimed at reaching consensus on a strategy on litigating OV in Africa.
As part of ISLA’s ongoing efforts to enhance awareness of the African Union reforms process and equip CSOs with the knowledge necessary for meaningful engagement, ISLA is launching a series of regional virtual events to maximize the dissemination of its AU reforms knowledge products. These webinars will provide comprehensive insights into the AU reforms process and ensure accessibility for stakeholders across Francophone, Lusophone, and Arabophone Africa. The series is scheduled to start in April.
About Us
Founded in 2014, the Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa (ISLA) is a Pan-African and feminist initiative with a timely remit: to strengthen strategic human rights litigation across the African continent. Essentially, we aim to change the way that strategic litigation is used so as to enable broader access to justice and to support those who seek to hold states accountable for violations of women’s human rights and sexual rights.
