Summary of the FLN-FWA strategic consultation in Abidjan
From 5 to 9 October 2026, ISLA brought together the Case Collaboration Partners (CCPs) and Panel of Experts (PEs) of its Feminist Litigation Network – Francophone West Africa (FLN-FWA) in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The week was an opportunity to consolidate feminist strategic litigation practice in the region and to prepare the network’s upcoming Institute.
After a first day devoted to presenting the FLN-FWA ecosystem and the role of CCPs and PEs, as well as to the foundations, the consultation turned to the substance of casework. On day two, participants tested feminist analytical frameworks against a real case study: interpreting the facts, building a transformative legal framing, developing a theory of change and shaping an advocacy strategy.
Day three focused on African human rights mechanisms: the Maputo Protocol, the African Charter and the ECOWAS Court of Justice. Drawing on a case handled by the network, participants discussed when to favour a regional forum and how to mobilise CCPs and PEs ahead of a regional referral.
Day four was devoted to amicus curiae interventions, illustrated through practical cases.
The week closed with ISLA’s three thematic areas, which are violence against women (VAW), women’s socio-economic rights (WSER) and countering anti-rights actors (CARA), together with a discussion on case identification. Each day, consultative sessions gathered participants’ expectations, and these valuable exchanges will help sharpen the curriculum of the upcoming FLN-FWA Institute.
